Learning vocabulary at A level can seem an endless. The lists are not always as coherent as at GCSE and can cover language which the students sometimes find random. When setting learning homeworks I do sometimes prefer to do this with a reading comprehension in mind and rather than test them from 1-10 on the list they have learnt, I give them a reading task in which all of the learnt vocabulary appears. I like doing this with past paper tasks. Attached is an example relating to the topic of youth interests and music. The text discusses the phenomenon of talents shows such as the X Factor. If they have learnt the vocabulary well, they should find the reading task straight forward thus illustrating the point I keep on trying to drive home that vocabulary learning is essential to success in the Unit 1 paper at AS Spanish i.e. listening and reading.
The reading task is adapted from a article that appear in the Ecuadorian newspaper El Telégrafo.

I have said in an earlier post that I like to give students vocabulary booklets on each topic we study. This is so they can prepare for vocabulary tests, use them as reference and as we are fast approaching the exams (only 12 lessons left with my Year 11!!!!!) they will need them for revision. I am posting all of the GCSE vocabulary booklets here including the one I have just completed on the topic of work and education. There will inevitably be typos! Sorry! Also, for those who may need to know, this is all based on the AQA syllabus + their word lists for Higher Level.

In earlier posts I’ve explained how I give my GCSE Spanish group a vocabulary booklet as we start each topic as some like to read ahead + use them for reference in the lessons. I have already posted the booklets for Healthy Living, Leisure and Relationships . Here is the latest I have made on Shopping which also includes areas such as clothes and technology. There are two more to come then the vocabulary for the GCSE Higher Level will be fully covered!

I have taken to giving my GCSE Spanish group a vocabulary booklet as we start each topic. Some of them are keen and like to look ahead + they like to use them for reference in the lessons. As my group this year is quite able, the booklets are for GCSE Higher level. We use the AQA examination board at my school for Spanish, so I have been through their syllabus and listed everything for the topics we have been working on. There are additions as well as some grammar sections. As I move to further topics I will post the booklets. They haven’t been made yet! Hopefully this will be of use to someone. Please let me know.
In addition we have talked at length about memorisation techniques, mostly in the context of learning for the speaking assessments i.e. chunks of language rather than just vocabulary. We got the drama teacher in to provide us with some advice given that in this subject area they have to learn lines. Their techniques should be directly applicable to preparation for the GCSE controlled assessments for speaking. Below is a video which may be of interest. I think some of the ideas are very relevant to vocabulary learning.
